چکیده
This paper tests the hypothesis Licensing by Cue (Steriade 1997) applying it to the distribution of Russian plain-palatalized contrast in coronal stops /t/ vs. /t/ in two environments (V_C, V_#). The hypothesis holds that the maintenance of the contrast should correspond to more acoustic information in the signal and higher identification rate, and that its neutralization should be accompanied by fewer cues and lower recognition of the segments. The results of acoustic and perceptual experiments do not fully support the hypothesis: while the relative acoustic and perceptual salience of the contrast before three consonants (_#k, _#n, _#s) correlates with within-word neutralization patterns, the lack of neutralization after three vowels (a_, u_, and i_) does not follow from the acoustic and perceptual results. The findings suggest that acoustic and perceptual factors play a certain role in maintenance and neutralization of phonological contrasts, however, the mapping between acoustics and phonology is not direct.

Testing Licensing by Cue: A Case of Russian Palatalized Coronals
The hypothesis 'licensing by cue' by Steriade holds that phonological contrasts are maintained in environments that provide better acoustic cues to the contrasts and are neutralized in environments that provide poorer acoustic cues or no cues. This paper tests the hypothesis by examining the distribution of a phonological contrast--the Russian plain/palatalized coronal stops /t/ and /tj/ in var...
متن کاملاصل توالی رسایی در زبان فارسی
In this study the distribution of sonority in syllable structure of Persian language is investigated. According to Sonority Sequencing Principle (SSP) sonority is minimum at the Onset, increases to maximum at the nucleus and decreases to last consonant of Coda. The results show that with some exceptions Persian language generally obeys SSP. The results also show that sonorant consonants are occ...
متن کاملCross-language Differences in Overlap and Assimilation Patterns in Korean and Russian
This paper investigates cross-linguistic differences in gestural overlap in consonant clusters and discusses how different patterns of overlap may interact with language-specific place assimilation patterns. We examine Russian and Korean stopstop sequences within and across words, produced at two speaking rates. Significant differences in degrees of overlap emerge between the two languages for ...
